What Is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine uses plants in various medicinal preparations to treat illnesses. It is the oldest form of medicine in the world and the chemical foundation of roughly two thirds of the drugs we use today. It combines modern sciences with traditional philosophies to diagnose diseases and prescribe bespoke herbal remedies for clients.

The journey to becoming a qualified Medical Herbalist involves rigorous training, including completing a 4-year Level 6 Diploma and accumulating at least 500 hours of clinical practice with clients. This comprehensive education covers anatomy and physiology, chemistry, pharmacy, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic techniques.

We can work with thousands of herbs to make a variety of preparations such as teas, tinctures, creams, capsules and more.

Herbalists often treat complex and chronic conditions that may not have been effectively addressed by conventional medicine, including hormone imbalances, digestive complaints, skin conditions, autoimmune disorders, and chronic pain management.

Central to a my approach is the understanding that health is a holistic state encompassing physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. During consultations, I take the time to listen to my clients' health histories and explore any emotional factors that may be contributing to their symptoms. Lifestyle recommendations and dietary improvements are often incorporated to support the body's natural healing processes.

In the diagnostic process, I may conduct various assessments, including ancient techniques such as examining the tongue, eyes and general appearance and feeling the qualities of the pulse, as well as more modern diagnostics such as taking blood pressure, listening to the lungs and heart, and other relevant tests.

My goal is to identify the root cause of illness and develop bespoke herbal remedies to address it.

While my aim is to restore my clients to optimal health where herbal prescriptions are no longer needed, sometimes long-term herbal support is necessary, especially for chronic conditions. I am able to work around and with prescribed drugs whenever this is in the best interest of the client.

Each person is unique, and herbal medicine embraces this individuality by tailoring treatments to suit the specific needs of each client. While it may be challenging to recommend a specific herb for a particular ailment without a thorough assessment, herbs can provide symptomatic relief while we formulate personalised remedies to address underlying imbalances.

At poppy.byNature, I am committed to empowering my clients on their journey to wellness through the gentle yet potent healing properties of herbal medicine. Whether you're seeking relief from a specific ailment or striving for overall wellbeing, I'm here to support you on your path to health and vitality.
